After my post on Thursday, Butch sent me pictures of our Christmas Eve table. That made me so happy!
Those little lights are gnomes. I always have little table favors. It's just a little treat that my family and friends can take home. I belong to a Facebook group called "Beautiful Table Settings." I was surprised to find so many people had never heard of such a thing--and seemed outraged at the prospect. They felt like the invitation and good food alone was enough of a "gift!" I don't disagree, but I love a little surprise!
I did not grow up with the concept of table favors, so I have no idea when and where I learned about them. But, I've been doing them for decades. That tradition continues with our family. It's just a fun little something. At our Christmas Eve breakfast I had little gingerbread ornaments. For Christmas Day, I had cute glass vials of tea tied up with ribbon and a wooden Christmas tree imprinted with "Merry Christmas." Actually, they were leftover from my Dickens party. But, none of the women at Christmas dinner were at that party, so I could get away with duplicates! You can see I'm serious about this!
So, moving on. One of my blog friends from England was asking about the biscuits and gravy casserole I made for breakfast on Christmas Eve. She was too polite to say, but I think she thought that sounded pretty gross. I have a feeling they don't have gravy at breakfast.
Anyway, I told her that I would post the recipe, so here it is.
Biscuits & Gravy Breakfast Casserole
12 oz. canned biscuits, cut in fourths
6 eggs
1 pkg. Pioneer Peppered Gravy mix
1 lb. sausage, browned and drained
1 cup shredded cheddar
1/2 cup milk
salt & pepper
Line bottom of 9x13 casserole with biscuits.
Layer sausage and cheese on top of biscuits.
Whisk eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Pour over top.
Make gravy according to the directions on the package and pour over top.
Bake at 350 for 35-45 minutes until.
Serve with extra gravy if desired (I think this is a must).
Can be refrigerated overnight. Let come to room temperature and bake as directed.
It's nice to have foods you can do in advance. If anyone has trouble finding the gravy (that included you too, Deb), I'll be happy to send a couple packs.
PS If there's anything you would like to hear about on my blog, just let me know.
Thank you! Now I happen to love sausages and they are definitely fine for breakfast, but I'm still not sure about the gravy! I'm also guessing that the biscuits must be different to English biscuits as to me a biscuit something crisp and sweet that you may have with a cup of coffee or tea - imagine a chocolate chip cookie! That does not seem to go with gravy!
ReplyDeleteYour table settings are beautiful and I love that idea of everyone having a little gift to take home, what a thoughtful sentiment.
Our biscuits are basically unsweetened scones. Same texture. They are eaten with butter and jam or with gravy! Pillsbury has them in a can in the refrigerated section of the grocery store. Not sure about there.
DeleteAha, it's getting clearer now! I think over here the 'biscuit' part of the dish would be called 'cobbler', we would have it on top of a casserole and I think the name may refer to how it looks like a cobbled street. So this sounds like an upside down sausage cobbler!
DeleteThe table on Christmas Eve was so beautiful! Robbie especially loved the gnome table favors. We put both of ours into our "Christmas scape" once we got back to LA, before putting all our decorations away a few days later! 😂
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to send pictures of your Christmas scape!
