Monday Mystery

Well, I have a humdinger for you today. 

We found this little cutie at our pool. We have no idea where it came from. Or rather, I thought I did know, but was wrong.

We only have one little girl who comes to our pool regularly. And that's LaRue, the granddaughter of my friend, Nancy. Well, she was over last week, so I asked her. She said that it wasn't hers. 

Hmmm? What in the world? There are absolutely no little girls visiting our pool (or boys for that matter). I cannot imagine where this little mermaid has come from. 

It's a mystery for sure.***

***Update. My friends and I had our last pool party last week. One of my friends noticed that the little mermaid is gone! What?? Another mystery. I have no idea what happen to it? Maybe it's some sort of magical little thing. Another mystery for sure.

Something for Sunday

This post is about our "luckiest" daughter. The girl wins so much! And lots of it is really good stuff!

It all started last weekend when we were floating in the pool. Mindy shared with us about her latest "win." She won a drawing and was THE FIRST “Mug on Monday” recipient from “Local on 2” (Nashville’s ABC affiliate that just recently was moved to the 9 am slot). She got quite a bit of air time--maybe a full minute or two with lots of pictures. She got to “shout-out” Justin and Mom & Dad!

I asked her to send me a list of other things she's won--in her words:

Oh wow- I don’t think I’ve even kept track of everything I’ve won! Suffice it to say I’ve won A LOT! I enter every “giveaway” I see!

-trip to Los Angeles to make candy bars with Lance Bass (from *NSYNC) and his husband. Mom was my guest. We had our hotel room comp’d and our dinner comp’d at “Pump” restaurant (from the reality show ‘Van Der Pump Rules’)

-chosen to “be our guest 4 the day DJs” on Sirius XMs Disney hits with Justin! Our segment played on 4 different days!

-won tickets to The Rolling Stones- but I already had plans to go with my sisters and mom, so I was able to give my “winning” to two of my best friends: Nicky and Dave! They loved the show!

-when I used to travel 100% for work, I would bring Justin scratch-off tickets from wherever I was, just for fun. One time we won over $500 from a Missouri lottery ticket! We decided to use the money to go to a fancy restaurant we had wanted to try. We ordered a bottle of wine and the waitress had to look at our IDs. Apparently she had the exact same birthday as me and was also named Melinda! (Maybe she was just buttering me up but she said it with such surprise that I believe she was literally another Melinda born on 12/7)

-speaking of gambling (🤪) the first time I ever went to a casino was when I was newly 18 and went to Tunica with a bunch of my friends. I got home just as Mom and Dad were getting up-and-moving for the morning. I started pulling bills out of my purse! Mom said to Dad: “oh no. She can’t think this always happens when you gamble!”

-just to clarify: I know ‘the house always wins’ and I do not gamble regularly. I just had an anomaly of a first casino experience! (mom here--she won hundreds!).

-I once won 2 dozen cookies from “Tiff’s Treats” (brought 1 dozen to my parent’s house so we could all enjoy!)

-Mom says I won a “Mother’s Day” drawing from Steven’s Grocery store! I hope she can find the sentiment! I don’t recall it! (mom here--she entered the contest by writing an essay about her mom. I'm sure she won because, after all the things she "loved" about me, she put that she loved that I took her to Steven's grocery!).

After she told us about her latest win, I said her best win was "Justin's heart!" Truly the best prize of all!

Actually, when it comes to "love"--Sandy and Stephanie WON the lottery too!! All three of our girls are "winners!"

Throwback Thursday

1. This was my very first baby doll. I don't remember much except I do remember that little bar of soap. I was about 4 when I got her. I named her Judy. We had a next door neighbor girl named Judy and I loved that name. I didn't get to love baby Judy for very long, because...

...my brother, Ronnie ran over her bisque head with his bike! It's hard to love a doll with no head.

2. This brings back so many memories. When you are from St. Louis, people think that means you grew up in a big city. Not so. We grew up in the country, but we did have bus service. I was about 10 (5th grade) when River Roads Mall was built. I have no idea how it got that name as it wasn't near any river. My best friend, Reenie and I were allowed to ride the bus there. We even rode our bikes sometime. 

One of our favorite things was to share a Coke, fries and a slice of pecan pie at Woolworth's. It cost us about a quarter. I'd love to get that same meal today!

3. OMGosh! The drive-in! So many good times. This was a treat when we were little. It cost $2.00 for the car--no matter how many people were inside. Mom would pop a grocery size bag full of popcorn and dad would ice down those little bottles of cokes in a tin bucket--such a treat for us. We rarely got soda even though mom had one every day at lunch while we had milk. Unfair!

When we got to the drive-in, we'd play on the playground until the first feature--cartoons or a kids movie started. Mom and Dad let Ronnie and I sit on top of the car on a blanket. Then, later, when we were all asleep the main feature started and...

...they snuck off to the snack bar and got real food!! I woke up once and caught them having malts and burgers with fries and onion rings! The unfairness of it all...that's how it was when you had seven kids. Actually, we only went to the drive-in with 5 kids. I think we quit going as the others came along--not enough room in the car. 

4. I got this Barbie when I was about 8 or 9.

But, I don't recall having the case. And I definitely did not have that many clothes. Even though no one ever called me "Barbie"--I liked that she had my name.

5. I got this Barbie wallet for my 7th birthday. Somewhere along the line, I also had a Barbie vinyl lunchbox. It had Barbie walking a dog while carrying the same Barbie lunchbox with the same picture on to infinity! 

Notice my chapped lips. I still remember how that hurt! And my parents kept saying, "Barbara, stop licking your lips!" I couldn't help it! The only thing we had back then was Vaseline and that didn't help at all.

What I Buy Wednesday

So. We're getting ready to start the HUGE job of renovating the pool and pool deck--again! We've been here for 30 years so it seems like it has to be done every 15 years--although this is the third time we've had to replace the tile. 

Butch and I went shopping last week. Of course, we don't always agree on things. I remember learning this lesson when we were house-hunting. Sometimes, I would love a place and he didn't. I'd be upset to not get my way. But, eventually I learned that when it's the right thing, we both love it. It's no different with pool tile.

There were several things that I liked but he didn't. And visa/versa (sp??). We finally agreed on this one:

On the way home, I said, "Hmmm, I think this might be what we already have." He looked at it again and said, "I think you might be right." 

We got home and he immediately went out to the pool. He didn't even have to go up to the pool. He came back inside and said, "Yep, it's the same!"

What?? How in the world did we pick out the exact same tile as we did 15 years ago from a completely different place? More importantly how did we not recognize it right away? 

Oh well, we liked it once and we like it again.
