Tuesday Thoughts About...

...t-shirts

I know this might offend some of my readers, but I’ll say it. T-shirts  are just plain sloppy!

There are many good uses for t-shirts:
I think they were meant as workout attire, sports attire, sleep wear, work clothes---like housework or yard work kind of work (definitely NOT the office)---and hanging out around the house attire. I could even go along with running a few errands—AFTER you’ve worked out!

But as a wardrobe staple? They are not “nice” clothes! To pair them with nice slacks is a definite “no-no!” Even paired with a nice pair of jeans is downright disrespectful to the jeans! I’m saying NO! And t-shirts in church—OMGosh! I can’t even go there!

Take traveling for instance. Look around. When you are traveling, you can pretty much bet that it will be the Americans in t-shirts. In foreign countries—okay, I’ll admit, I’m no expert on foreign travel, but I’ve been around—even the locals do not wear t-shirts as a mainstay garb for around town. In fact, I’m pretty sure we were turned away from a nice restaurant in France because a member of our party was in a t-shirt!

Lest you think I’m being all “high and mighty” and snobbish here, I have a confession to make. One Sunday, upon arriving at Mass, we were approached to “bring up the gifts” during the Offertory. Of course, I’m all like—“Us? You want us! Oh, what an honor!” (Not really, but it sounds good). About the time we were returning, I noticed that Stephanie (around 10 years old), was wearing a black t-shirt with an ugly, green ghoul on the front (in her defense it was near Halloween—who am I kidding, there’s no defense!)  I was mortified. But then, I was that mom who didn’t even notice what her daughter was wearing to church! All I can say is—it wasn’t me! T-shirts in church--never!

Don’t get me wrong. I have several t-shirts that I love. I wear them on scrapbook retreats, but that’s about as far “out” as I’ll go in being seen in public in a t-shirt. I’m not alone in this. My friends don’t wear t-shirts out and about either.

Despite my feeling about t-shirts, I have a closet full of them. I just can't seem to get rid of them!
 You've got your travel t-shirts. I wanted a long-sleeve one AND it's pink!
You've got your favorite sports team winning t-shirts. Cardinals---yeah, baby!
And, of course, our personalized Disney t-shirts for our favorite family vacays.
This one speaks for itself---"Deen" that is.
Well, this one is just my life!
You've got your collegiate tees---vintage Mindy.
Okay, I earned this one. I'm never getting rid of it!
You've got your hobby t-shirts (and it's pink).
You've got your concert t-shirts---it's Garth---there's nothing left to say about that!
You've got your hometown sports teams--even if you don't really follow sports.
This one is my truth!
And then you have your hometown tee. And again, it's pink!

Then you have t-shirts that aren't really t-shirts after all. All you need to do is add those little zippers to make it a nice top!

However I might feel about t-shirts, one thing I know for sure, they make great paint rags!

  1. I have a pet peeve about t shirts, I can't bear seeing older people with t-shirts with funny slogans across the front of them! I don't really wear t shirts although I do wear long sleeve tops that are almost t shirts but with a bit of shape and design to them (does that even make sense?)

    1. Yes, Deb, that makes perfect sense. Now that I'm over 29 (by more than a bit), I rarely wear t-shirts with logos on them, Cardinals baseball being the notable exception. I do wear a lot of little tops that are basically tee shirts - in fact, my father-in-law noted one time that was my style. V neck, 3/4 sleeves and black are the most prevalent in my wardrobe.
