Sleeping Habits

Our sleeping habits have certainly changed over the years. In our early years, we always went to bed at the same time--usually around 10 p.m. Butch has always---from the very beginning---gone to bed with the tv on. I NEVER watch tv in bed unless I'm sick. You can almost count on one hand how many times I've done that. In those early years, before remote controls and the tv was still black and white, I would get up sometime in the middle of the night and turn it off. It got to the point that I did it so routinely, that I never even remembered doing it. Once remote controls were invented, it became much easier. The remote was on the bed between us, so I didn't have to search for it. Very convenient.

Everything went along smoothly like that for the first 28 years. Then came prednisone---yes, nearly 18 years ago. That changed my sleep pattern. I stayed up later than Butch and got up earlier than him.   I slept about 5-6 hours a night. That was fine by me---I got so much more done in my days. He went to bed before me. When I went in around 11 p.m. he was already sleeping soundly. I would just turn off the tv and read for a half hour or so. I've been reading in/before bed since I was a little girl (I learned to read very early). Butch has never complained about my reading or my little book light---ahem---like some people I know!

So you might be wondering what this is all about. Well, since I've been off the prednisone, I've been going to bed earlier---many times before Butch. I've been reading more at bedtime than ever before. Since I have fewer hours in the day, it's tv that I've decided to sacrifice. Here's the problem. If Butch goes to bed AFTER me, it wakes me up if he turns the tv on. I told him I was okay with that. Instead, he's staying up later and falling asleep in his recliner.

I don't like it. I never wanted to be one of those couples who don't sleep together. There's something intimate about sleeping together that I don't want to lose. Although, I will admit, when we were re-doing the bathroom and moved upstairs, we each took a room. Actually, that was pretty nice. I could almost make the case for separate rooms. But I don't want to.

That brings us to what happened last night. Butch and I were talking. It got to be about 8:30. I was getting ready to watch an episode of Bloodline. He decided he wanted to sit on the front porch for awhile. I yelled at him, "No, you need to get to bed!" I don't know when it happened, but since he's staying up later, our sleep patterns are all screwed up! If he would just go to bed at 9 like he used to, everything would be just fine!

There's one thing I haven't mentioned---snoring. His doesn't bother me. After all, I've heard it for 46 years. Apparently, it's mine that is the problem. I don't really like to think about that---so unladylike. But there's nothing I can do about it. I did buy some of those snore strips and have used them the past two nights. The jury is still out on whether they work or not.

I don't know how this problem will be resolved. But in the meantime, at least we have a nice place to sleep---when we do.

A Weekend All About Butch!

Actually, the week began with the arrival of Sandy and family on Tuesday. We spent Wednesday relaxing at the pool. We pretty much did it all. We went to Steph's to see their new house, the whole family (14 of us---Mitchell was the only one missing) went to the club for dinner, had another pool day with the Potters (Sandy and Amanda were best friends growing up) and then happy hour. I snapped a few pictures.
Now what you need to know about our happy hours: they are very organized. We go around the room and each person tells one thing about their week.
One of my pet peeves is multiple conversations going on at the same time. That's why this works for us. Every one gets heard! Even the ones that don't really want to be!
Morgan's boyfriend, Carter was there as was Andrew, Jordan's boyfriend. Jordan suggested that since there were so many of us and only one hour before leaving for dinner, that we each do an abbreviated story. We put her in charge of what order we'd go in.
Mindy and Justin told about Mindy washing a down comforter that had a hole that she didn't know about. The feathers were everywhere---even stuck to the walls---all over the condo---not just in the laundry room. They just seemed to blow out everywhere.

video
She sent me this video that she took for Justin. It's amazing. Well, it seems I don't know how to add a video.
Watching them describe the mess was pretty funny!
After happy hour, we went to dinner at Sperry's---one of our favorite local steak places. Reservations for 14! Stephanie and Nicky came back to the house after for a couple hours.

Saturday was a pool party and barbecue. I didn't get any pictures---just didn't think about it. But the day was devoted to this guy---first his birthday.
I couldn't resist posting this old picture again! No, he didn't really wear vests! This one was a gift that he put on when he received it.
He still skis---this picture is about a year or two old.
Fishing is another of his favorite pastimes.
Mindy and Justin gave him this shirt last year. He's the #1 poster in Nashville for Trip Advisor. They actually contact him! Any way, if he doesn't like something, he refers to his post as "I skewered them!"
More fish!

We then celebrated Father's Day. That's one of my most favorite things I love about him. He's always had such a special relationship with his "girls!" That actually extends to this day and the grands. Mostly they call with car related issues, but still, I love that he's always looking out for them.
He was so in love with Sandy from the start! Hers were the start of his car problems! One day on the way to work, the traffic was held up due to a stalled car. He was "mad!" As he creeped forward he discovered it was Sandy!! She was very happy to see him---long before cell phones!
When Steph came along, his heart expanded (he was concerned that it wouldn't)! There's not a thing he wouldn't do for her (remember the recent cat door?) All she has to do is ask! I can't even tell you how many trips hauling things he did with her recent move. He's just like that.
And then there's this one. To say she's been able to walk all over him from the start about sums it up!

When it came to the girls, he was the "player" with them. I was the "reader of books." He got down on the floor and did everything---Barbies, blocks, My Little Ponies, games, beauty parlor where they did his hair and wrestled with them---all while watching sports!

He's the BEST! Happy Father's Day!! We all love you!

Things I Don't Understand

On Your Feet ---which was our favorite out of the 4 Broadway productions we saw while in New York---is closing in August. It's the Gloria and Emilio Estefan story. It was soooo good! Outstanding, really. It was all high energy, the music we all remember and great choreography. I just don't understand it. It must have to do with advertising. Until I picked it for us to see, we hadn't heard of it. On the other hand, Hamilton is all the rage. Sure, we liked it, but we didn't think it was better than On Your Feet. Good news. The Broadway production is closing, but the touring company will be bringing it to a theater near you!

I do not understand how this cylinder at the bank...
Gets all the way across the parking lot to this building in just a matter of seconds. How?? I suppose it's some sort of vacuum system. But how can it be so fast?

Another thing I don't understand---Dwight Yocum has friended me on Facebook. I realize he's not quite the star he once was, but since I've never met  him, perhaps I should take this as another scam! Anyway, I deleted his request. Sorry, Dwight, you're coming off a little desperate! No girl likes that!

A Whirlwind Trip

I went to St. Louis on Friday morning for the weekend. I flew in and my cousin, Chrissy picked me up. She picks me up all the time. It gives us a chance to spend the day together. We did a little shopping. I found these for Stephanie...
...a pair of cute flip flops from Kate Spade. I got them for Stephanie because hers was the only size they had. Fun fact about Kate Spade---she's married to David Spade's older brother.

We went to several stores and wound up at Charming Charlie's. I found a few fun accessories. After, we had lunch at Freddie's. Chrissy introduced me to Freddie's a couple years ago. I always want to go to Steak and Shake when I'm in St. Louis. She said the Freddie's was better and she's right! It's so good---just like Steak and Shake used to be!

We got to my brother, Matt's around 3:30 after a stop at the grocery store. Chrissy helped me make the grape salad for the shower. She spent the evening with us. Janet, Jeanne and Jim came by. Matt fried some of the 100 crappie he had caught that day with his friend. The fish was delicious!
When bedtime came, Matt had turned down the sheets and left mints on the pillow!
The next day, we went to Jackie's for Allison's baby shower---the reason I was there. Jeanne made this adorable diaper cake. Allison is going to have a girl and is doing her room in pink and grey.

The party favors were Janet's idea---something about "popping."
Evie was playing with a "fidget spinner." I had never even heard of them until Chris E. had told that her grandchildren's school had banned them. After that, I started seeing them everywhere!
Evie, Nathan and Travis---I told them about my plan for them on our family vacation in July. I've invited them to Camp Aunt Barb! I have all kinds of fun things planned for them. Butch has agreed to help me with the fishing part! Josie is 2 and not pictured here, but she'll be at the camp!
Aunt Marie, my mom's younger sister. I hadn't seen her since Christmas. She looks so good for 82, don't you think!
A few shots of the party.

The mama to be with Scarlett by her side.
We took the party over to my brother, Ronnie's for the rest of the afternoon and evening. We had plenty of food left! Here's little Josie. She kept eating and eating and eating. Her mom tried to convince us that she's not a good eater.
Based on the amount she ate we didn't believe her.

We got home around 10, so I hit the sack. The next morning, I was barely out of bed when my brother did this!
I would have stripped the bed!! Later when I offered to help make it, it was already done! He's pretty compulsive when it comes to cleaning. I never saw anyone wipe the counter and sink so many times in a row! When he had the sink wiped out, I felt bad that I needed to rinse something. That set him off again.
On Sunday, we spent the afternoon outside. The weather was gorgeous.

Their back patio and flowers are gorgeous. Everything is so inviting.
Sharon and I went to Oma's Barn---a garden and gift shop. When we got back, we picked up Matt and Scarlett to go to Stephanina's for lunch. They have great Italian food. I always want Italian while I'm in St. Louis too.

They took me to the airport where I had planned to watch some of the Stanley Cup hockey game. I was so disappointed! They had CNN on. I asked if the tv could be changed and the gate agent said "no!." I went down to a bar---which was completely full, but they had a basketball game on and a rodeo. I guess since the Blues weren't in the Stanley Cup, St. Louis isn't interested!

I did manage to get the game on my phone. I was able to watch the entire first period. Butch picked me up and we listened to it on the way home. The score was still 0-0 with little time left in the 4th quarter. We hit a dead spot near our house and missed the Penguins goal! We got home and watched the last 40 seconds. A disappointing end for the Predators, but they played hard! Maybe next year.

Now I'm gearing up for Sandy and family this week. We're all looking forward to it! We have a lot planned and no one wants to miss anything. But with jobs, it's hard to find times that work for everybody for everything! We do what we can...

My First Hydrangeas of the Season

They are gorgeous:

But then in came this with the flowers:
They say ticks are going to be really bad here this year. They are always bad in my yard. I have the pool and garden area around it sprayed every year. I don't have the front porch area sprayed, but maybe I need to start.

It's enough to make you itch all day!

More Scams

Sincerely, who falls for these:

I' m Maureen Hinckley from Sterling Massachusetts. My foundation is donating $550,000 to you.Contact us for further details.

I don't even know a single Maureen. I seriously doubt her foundation is giving me money. I just don't get it!

And here's the one I almost fell for. I was in the middle of updating my info when I had second thoughts. I have Netflix and realized that my credit card was out-of-date. As I was updating it, I got a funny feeling, so I stopped. I decided that I would wait until I had time to go directly to the Netflix site and check it out. Besides, I hadn't been having any trouble watching Netflix.

I'm so glad I waited. The very next day, I got my receipt from Apple---through which Netflix is charged. Whew!! That was close!

Hockey in Smashville!

This is an exciting time to be in Nashville. Okay, it's always exciting to be here these days. Downtown is always crowded. But, now more than ever with the Predators competing for the Stanley Cup.

Saturday night, while Stephanie and Mindy were at the game, Nicky invited us over. He was planning to have friends, but that fell through. Still he wanted us to come. He bought barbecue for dinner.
Ya' gotta' love a son-in-law who wants to hang out with us---at his house---when he doesn't have to! We were having a great time. The food was delicious. Then, about half way through the 2nd period, his friends showed up. Nick with his girlfriend, Nikkie and his bestie/almost brother, Rob. I've known these kids since they were all in the second grade when we moved here.

In the meantime, we were very happy to NOT be in the middle of this:
This is Demonbreun in front of the Country Music Hall of Fame. Mindy lives two blocks from here. She and Justin love living downtown.
 Another view.
This is Broadway, a block over and in front of the arena. They say 60,000 people were down there.
We definitely love our hometown team! Go Preds!! Just two more to go!!
