This first post is about my friend, Nancy. Here we are in our younger years:
I hate that I have so few pictures of us and then there's this one. Seriously--I have no idea who took this picture. For crying out loud, did she not see that the tea tray was right in our faces? Sheesh! Oh well, it's what I have.
Okay, on to the purpose of this post.
Nancy started quilting about 6 months ago--maybe a year. Anyway, she has really cranked out some gifts for Christmas for every member of her family.
I love the fun designs and pretty color combinations. I love that these will be heirlooms for her family. It made me nostalgic for my quilting days.
I quilted in the 1980's. I started all by myself just signing up for a class. Now you need to know that I didn't know anything about sewing. I did needlepoint, but I knew nothing of fabric. When the teacher said something about the "selvidge", I timidly raised my hand and asked what the selvidge was--on the very first day of the class. She kind of chuckled, but I knew that inside she was thinking, "Oh no, what have I gotten myself into?!"
It wasn't long before I made a nice group of friends there. That teacher invited me to join a group called "Granny's Attic." We went to craft fairs and sold our quilted items--mostly pieces in assorted sizes of embroidery hoops-and pillows--each of us doing something different. It was a lot of fun. I didn't make enough to support my "habit", but rarely do you make much on handmade items. You just cannot get your time out of it in the way of dollars.
Sadly, even though I made several quilts, I don't have a single picture. The best one I did was for Stephanie when she was little. It was assorted quilted squares in burgundy, pink and white. I quilted it in burgundy thread with pretty designs on white, so the stitching really stood out. Stephanie has it packed away somewhere. The only thing it would be good for today would be to display on a quilt rack as the sun faded one whole side from when it was on her bed.
I loved quilting. But when we moved to Nashville in 1985, I never did it again. I had a new baby and didn't know anyone who quilted.
Nancy and I have shared many crafty endeavors through the years. We made cards, we scrapbooked, we stamped, we needlepointed and even had a craft group called "The Glitzy Gals." Side note: I did not vote for that goofy name!! Anyway, that group fell apart when one of the girls passed away. I don't really know why.
Even though Nancy and I don't craft together anymore, I'm glad that we're still friends. Heck, if I was 20 years younger, I might have taken it up again. But one thing I know for sure--I do NOT need to fall down that rabbit hole again!!! I have enough habits as it is!!
