Showtunes Saturday

It's been forever since I've done a Saturday Showtunes post. I just had to do one today!

All I can say is Jesus Christ Superstar! John Legend was great! The only thing I didn't like were the darn commercials. It really took away from the show. Nothing like a commercial to break the action! In fact, you have to watch a commercial before you can view this video. Ugh! Still, the music...oh Andrew, how I love thee!

But----but, this guy is still my most favorite of all time! Jesus Christ Superstar! Ted Neeley is fabulous! Be sure to watch it all the way to the end. So powerful! Butch and I were so lucky to have seen Ted on stage reprising this role.

I think I'll be a theater nerd forever. And glad for it!

I've Always Loved Donnie Osmond

I wish I could have seen him on Broadway in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. That would have been something. Instead, enjoy this beautiful holiday song.
Mary Did You Know

And it just wouldn't be Christmas without this:
White Christmas

Here's hoping that you all have the BEST Christmas, from our house to yours! I love you guys!

Saturday Showtunes---"O Holy Night"

Not exactly a showtune, but during this holiday season, I decided that I wanted to post my all time favorite Christmas song. And who could do it better than:

Josh Groban

Family baking day today. I'm sure there will be a story to tell...

Saturday Showtunes---A Christmas Carol

I've seen "A Christmas Carol" on stage many times. In fact, about 14 years ago, Butch surprised me with a trip to New York during December. He planned the entire trip. One of my favorite things we did was see Roger Daltry from The Who perform as Ebenezer Scrooge at Madison Square Gardens. As you entered the theater, it looked like an old English street with lampposts, flower and vegetable carts lining the cobblestones with people dressed in period costumes. It was a very special trip to me.

I couldn't find a clip on "you tube" of that show, but decided instead to present you with a clip of my favorite version of:
A Muppet's Christmas Carol:

I'd been talking about this version so much, that I've invited a few friends over to watch it with me while we stitch on the 20th.

What's your favorite version of "A Christmas Carol?" If you say "Mr. Magoo" you'll definitely be giving your age away!

Saturday Showtunes---Cats!

Today, probably about the time you are reading this, I'll be waist deep in glitter along with 10 of Mindy's little friends. Oh wait, those friends aren't so little after all. She's 27 and having that birthday party she "conned me in to"--- complete with crafts and food. I'll make it fun for them.

In the meantime, Since Cats  is Mindy's favorite musical, I'm giving you her favorite number:
"Magical Mr. Mistoffeles"

What would I do without "you tube?"

Party report later.

Showtunes Saturday---"Think of Me"

Today is Stephanie's 35th birthday, so I decided to devote this Saturday Showtunes to her. She love Phantom of the Opera and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat---both are tied for #1 in her book, so here's a selection from each!

Showtunes Saturday---Memphis

And this is why we came to New York:

Adam Pascal in Memphis

and this with Bon Jovi member/creator of Memphis David Bryan
Adam Pascal in Memphis

I have been lucky enough to see Adam Pascal on stage three times now. The first time, Mindy and I didn't even know who he was. We saw him in Aida---somewhere around 1999. When Rent the movie---starring the original cast---came out, we recognized his voice. Adam originated (and had his Broadway debut) in the role of Roger in Rent. Then about two years ago, I saw him perform his role in Rent along with Anthony Rapp at the Fox in St. Louis. That was a special treat for me. I took Ranya, Janet and Jeanne with me.

I "snagged" my first autograph last night and am thrilled to add this to my "junk!" Notice the date too.
The irony of this is that I'm supposed to see Memphis in Nashville on Wednesday night. We'll be at Sandy's by then, so it's a good thing I came to New York to see it!!

Showtunes Saturday---Bonus and an Apology!

In my post about the TPAC Gala last weekend, I only included one photo---"my bad" (I hate that term, but anyway). To add insult to injury, the person I left out was actually behind the camera. This is Jennifer, one of Steph's closest friends. She is so cute----and "P-O-P-U-L-A-R!!!" She knows everyone in town! Truly! Since that is the song that Kristen Chenowith sang at the Gala (from "Wicked"), I'm offering it here on Jennifer's behalf!! Jennifer, here's to you!

Showtune Saturday---Anything Goes

I love Cole Porter music. I've seen this on stage a couple of times. The story is "campy" but I don't care. I always enjoy the music, costumes, set and choreography. If the story is good, it's just an added bonus. But that's not usually the case with the "old" stuff.

Showtune Saturday---Jekyll & Hyde

Since it's Halloween weekend, I had to pick something a little creepier. I've only seen Jekyll & Hyde onstage once, but thoroughly enjoyed it. I just love musicals---don't you? Just saw Wicked for the third time this week! I almost picked something from that, but I think I'll wait until Easter for that one!

Enjoy!
Confrontation!

Showtune Saturday---Meet Me in St. Louis

In honor of the Cardinals in the World Series, I decided to go with a popular little "ditty" by Judy Garland. Go Cards---Janice and I have a bet going! Don't you red birds let me down!

Showtunes Saturday---Where it All Began

Butch and I went to NewYork for the first time in the early 1980's. It was a company trip. The very first play I ever saw there was You Can't Take it With You starring Jason Robards. We had such a good time that we got tickets for Evita the next night. That was my very first musical on Broadway. I was hooked from then on---the costumes, sets, choreography---just everything about it. There is nothing like the small, intimate theaters of NewYork.

This clip is a little grainy, but I would have loved to see her perform this in person. Enjoy:

Saturday Showtunes---Lion King

While we were in London, Mindy told Stephanie that she wanted to have a family movie night---The Lion King was showing in 3D (or maybe that was 4D) for a limited engagement for just a few days. Turns out that the tickets were $14.00 each X 4=$56.00. Steph "sprang" for dinner at Cheeseburger Charley's---a fast food, sort of gourmet burgers---really good. She was shocked at what dinner cost. I eat under $10.00 there because I get the children's combo. Her girls get big stuff and the malts too---it all adds up. Anyway, they had a fun evening.

Since Lion King is one of my favorite stage performances---not so much for the story, but for the choreography and costumes (oh my), I decided to go with that this weekend. And who better than the composer to sing it!

Mindy, this one's for you:
Can You Feel the Love Tonight

Sorry about that annoying commercial. Looks like they are starting to attach them to a lot of videos.

Saturday Showtunes---Mama Mia

I remember the first time I saw Mama Mia on stage. I just couldn't figure out how they could weave an entire story around the songs of ABBA. They did it and I fell in love with it right away. I've seen it 3 times on stage including once in New York. Theaters in New York are just plain fabulous! Of course I also own the movie. Enjoy!

Saturday Showtunes---Big River

This one is in honor of my friend, Connie. "Arkansas" is from her favorite show---Big River. It's about Huck Finn. Great show and great music. You'd recognize many songs. This is one of my favorites:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVtMp6-6ksk&feature=related

There are so many good songs, that I couldn't stop with just one. Roger Miller wrote the music for Big River. It won 7 Tony awards including one for this song "River in the Rain" sung by Roger Miller himself:

What would I do without youtube to let me experience all of my favorite showtunes?

Saturday Showtunes---I Had a Dream

Who could ever forget this performance from my favorite show of all time:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxPZh4AnWyk

This song is also one of my ringtones on  my phone. You might remember that after I purchased it, I found out that the line that plays is: "I dreamed my life would be....so different from this HELL I'm living." Of all the beautiful lyrics this is what I got. Don't get me wrong, I love that phrase in the song, but it seems wrong for me. My life is pretty darn good---most of the time anyway.

Everyone's a Little Bit Racist

For Showtune Saturday, I've picked this one from Avenue Q. It is another of my favorite plays, but don't be fooled by the muppet caharacters---it is definitely NOT for children. Have a laugh!

Saturday Showtunes

Every Saturday, I'm going to post a showtune clip. Mindy sang this one for an audition at St. Cecilia Academy when she was in high school:
